Book Floret Farm's A Year in Flowers: Designing Gorgeous Arrangements for Every Season Review :

First let me say that I love Floret. Erin is inspiring and an industry leader. Perhaps my expectations were too high with this book but I was disappointed. I was so excited to delve into the book when it arrived (I preordered it months ago), but didn’t find much substance to the book. I had a notebook and pen next to me as I read the book, and when I finished my notepad was still empty. Maybe I read too much of the Floret blog and stalk the Floret seed shop that everything felt redundant. I’m shocked that I feel there are too many pictures (gasp, I didn’t know that was possible) and not enough words of explanation. The section on color theory is just pathetic and frustrating. Honestly, I would recommend the books In Bloom by Clare Nolan and The Flower Workshop by Ariella Chezar over a Year in Flowers. Will I still preorder Erin’s next Dahlia book? Absolutely. But I do wish I had saved myself some $ and valuable bookshelf space and just bought the kindle version of Year In Flowers.
Erin Benzakein has shared her heart and soul in this beautiful book. The prose is minimal but what there is has a pastoral quality that is warm and engaging. She begins with a brief biological sketch that shares her personal story and struggles to find the path to what is being offered in this volume. Erin has paid her dues! The first 25% of the book focuses on: Getting Started (list of supplies, tools), Setting Up Your Space (how, where, materials needed, options), Mechanics (setting things properly to avoid pain and fatigue), Vessels (pots’n stuff), Sourcing (how, why and where to buy flowers and supplies), Caring for Cut FlowersThe next 50% covers the Design and Techniques - the actual flower arrangements from Fundamentals & Color thru all 4 seasons and specialty projects. The pictures in this book are glorious. Many are of the finished projects but there are a fair amount that provide step-by-step guidance for tricky techniques or others are just for sheer enjoyment of the beauty the flowers provide.Closing out the last 25% is the A-Z Ingredient Guide; sure to become your new best friend. This reference tool provides individual info for 200 unique flowers or plants and their “lifespan” after being harvested/cut. There are also resources and an index that is interactive.I have some very crafty sisters and friends who are also gifted in the garden. With Mother’s Day fast approaching, this fine book is now on the top of my gift giving list📚
